The Learning Environment in Architecture
Analysing, reflecting and improving the learning environment in architecture to address the learning preferences of the students
Learning takes place in a physical environment with certain physical characteristics. However, that learning environment results from interaction between physical elements, learners and teachers. While teaching architecture, the learning environment acquires a special relevance and is seen as a space of experimentation and reflexion. I have developed an action research project to analyse, reflect and identify ways of improving the learning environment in architecture, considering the student’s learning preferences. The research outcomes reflect the complexity of the learning environment and stress the importance of combining different factors to shape the learning environment. The physical environment needs to be evaluated together with the teaching/learning practices and the levels of comfort and wellbeing of all the participants.
